AfroBasket: Tunisia Dethrone Nigeria As African Champions

Nigeria’s senior male basketball team, D’Tigers, has failed to defend their Afrobasket title, after they lost to co-hosts Tunisia 77-65 in the final played on Saturday.

Two years ago, the team won the trophy on the same ground.

However, this year, they were outclassed by the North Africans.

Nigeria won the first quarter 14-8, but lost the second quarter as Tunisia took a 25-24 lead into the break.

It was more difficult for the Nigeriains in the third quarter when the Tunisians mounted serious pressure on them and the effort helped the co-hosts to gain more advantage that saw them leading the quarter with a commendable 27-16 points.

The last quarter however ended in a 25-25 points tie to pave way for the Tunisians to emerge as the  new African champions as the game ended 77-65 against D’Tigers.

As usual, D’Tigers captain Ike Diogu tried all he could but his effort was not enough to see Nigeria retaining the title as he contributed 20 points and 10 rebounds in the defeat. Point Guard Ikenna Iroegbu added two assists.

The Tunisians won the third quarter 52-40, making it very difficult for D’Tigers to get back into the game.

Tunisia wrapped up victory 77-65 in the last quarter, to be crowned the new African champions.
