Andy Murray beat John Isner in straight sets to give Great Britain a 3-1 Davis Cup victory over the USA in Glasgow.

The British team came into Sunday’s singles matches with a 2-1 lead, having won both of Friday’s singles but lost Saturday’s doubles match in a five set thriller.

Britain needed just one point from the final two matches to secure victory at the Braehead Arena, and the Australian Open finalist made no mistake against John Isner as he won 7-6 6-3 7-6.

Isner fought hard throughout but Murray’s class was all too evident, and the victory prompted joyous scenes of celebration on the court afterwards.

Though Murray had always been expected to win his two singles rubbers, much of the credit for the win will go to James Ward – whose miraculous victory in Friday night’s second singles match, where he came from two sets behind to beat Isner 15-13 in the fifth set, set up the win.

“I’ve always loved playing Davis Cup,” said Murray. “The atmosphere here was incredible, it made a big difference to all of us.”

Britain will now face France in the quarter-finals, while will be played in July – most likely on grass courts, since Britain have home advantage.
