Enyeama won’t win the African Player of the Year Award- Garba Lawal

Former Super Eagles player Garba Lawal has emphatically stated that Nigerian goalkeeper, Vincent Enyeama will not win the African Player of the Year Award.

Enyeama was on Thursday shortlisted by the Confederation of African Football(CAF) for the final three-man list alongside Ivory Coast skipper, Yaya Toure and Gabon striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

However, Lawal does not see Enyeama beating Toure, the current winner to the award.

“How is he going to win? Among the shortlisted players, who do you see week in, week out? Week in, week out, we see Yaya Toure playing for Manchester City. If Yaya Toure does not play, Manchester City will miss something. I want Enyeama to win but I don’t think it is possible,” he told The Punch

“Based on what we have been seeing week in, week out, Enyeama has no chance. If I’m the one to vote, I’ll vote for my countryman, but it is not possible for them to win on merit. We see Yaya Toure play and he is fantastic. That is the reality. We don’t need to bring sentiment into this. We want our people to win but how?

“Yaya is going to the Africa Cup of Nations. We are not going. That is a fact. Yaya is playing a prominent role in Manchester City and the club in second on the English Premier League table and in the last 16 of the Champions League. The award will go to Yaya Toure unless some miracle happens along the way.
