Arsenal captain Per Mertesacker has reiterated the statement made by Petr Cech that they’re capable of beating Chelsea on Sunday.
Mertesacker says the recent 4-0 defeat by Liverpool at Anfield has left no scars on the team ahead of their trip to Chelsea.
“We were punished by Liverpool’s game-plan and by us not sticking to ours,” said the Germany international. “We cannot make the same mistakes again.
“Liverpool beat us on the break and Chelsea will try to do the same on Sunday. The way we were defeated [at Stamford Bridge] last season, we have to look very deep into that game to find our rhythm.
“We have found our rhythm against Chelsea at Wembley, but that is different circumstances than Stamford Bridge. We have to take that rhythm from Wembley and the way we played and the way we prepared for those games. It is down to us.
“It is different at Stamford Bridge. It is a completely different pitch [to Wembley] and it is going to be a different game. I think they will change a little bit because those two defeats hurt them, but we have to be confident going into that game. That needs more discipline than we showed against Liverpool.
“We need to make sure we repeat the habits we showed at Wembley. That is the difficulty in our job. As a unit we have to be compact and defend well – that is what we did against them at Wembley – and, yes, we believe in ourselves.”
