Manchester City are determined to beat rivals Manchester United, to the signing of Alexis Sanchez if he quits Arsenal this summer.
Sources have told ESPN FC that Pep Guardiola is optimistic about being reunited with the Chile international, who he signed for Barcelona in 2011. They spent one season together, before Guardiola left the Camp Nou.
After City’s 2-2 draw at the Emirates on April 2, Guardiola rushed onto the pitch to hug Alexis at full time and praised him in his postmatch news conference, describing him as “one of the best players in the world.”
Cooperativa in Chile has reported that Alexis wants to leave, but says the player wants to remain in England, with City his preferred destination.
Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain are also reportedly interested in the 28-year-old, who has 15 months left on his current deal.
Despite heading into the final year of his contract, the Gunners are reluctant to part with their star man and could demand £40 million for him.
