YSFON to introduce progressive academic program

The Youth Sports Federation of Nigeria (YSFON) is set to introduce a progressive academic program aimed at the overall sports development in Nigeria.

This move was made known by the Vice President of YSFON, Alhaji Faruk Malami Yabo while on a visit to the Nigeria Football Federation office in Abuja to introduce the program to the leadership of the nation’s football.

Yabo in a brief chat with journalists urged the sports administrators to balance sports development with education for young athletes.

According to him, “we are trying to see that education is blended with sports and that has been my stand. We experimented this in Uyo last year, he noted.

“So we are here to tell NFF that our young athletes must have the opportunity of blending education with sports,” he said.

Yabo is of the belief that if the government can introduce a coordinated sports development program, the potentials of young people can be unlocked.

“I did an empowerment program in 2009 in Sokoto through which we were able to get players to play for the national team such as Usman Mohammed who scored in the friendly match against Atletico Madrid. Abdullahi Shehu is part of the program and he is playing for the national team,” he noted.

While speaking on the Nations Cup qualifying match between Nigeria and Libya on Saturday, Yabo said the Super Eagles have the ability to deliver when the country expects them to.

“We have defeated Libya severally and serially and we will achieve that again,” he concluded.
